September 2019

Welcome to September! We hope you all had a great summer and are ready for the autumn season. September means that all of our sessions will be re-opening (week commencing Monday 2nd September) and we’ll be preparing for some great new activities and of course the biggest event of the year – our Christmas Fayre. We are now open for stall bookings and will gratefully receive any donations you can spare including unwanted gifts, chocolates and bottles. Please contact us on 01274 679843 if you would like to donate or book a stall. `

Sedbergh Centre AGM

The Sedbergh Youth & Community Centre will hold its Annual General Meeting on Tuesday 17th September from 6 p.m. We are looking for more people to get involved and everyone is welcome to come along.

This lovely photo of the Sedbergh Boy’s Football Team has recently resurfaced. Can anyone guess the year? Do you have any old photos of Sedbergh?

Great British Beach Day

On 21st August, young people from the NCS (“National Citizen Service”) came along to the Sedbergh Centre to present a Great British Beach Day for our Young at Heart group. Everyone had a fantastic afternoon and enjoyed the sweet stall, seaside Bingo, hook-a-duck, beach word search, mocktails and a sandcastle competition.

The young people involved in this intergenerational day really put their hearts and souls into organizing, fund-raising, campaigning and presenting a wonderful project and we would like to express our thanks to all those involved. NCS is a life-changing programme open to teenagers to enable them to discover who they are and what they can do.

Teddy Bear’s Picnic

Last month we held a Teddy Bear’s Picnic for our Toddlers Stay and Play group with the help of a team of volunteers from M&S in Birstall. The day was a ROAR-ing success as we celebrated in the sun with a delicious bear buffet, story-time and a teddy bear’s parade! A big THANKS to M&S and to everyone who attended and supported us.

Sedbergh Community BBQ

Our Community BBQ was a great success last month when people from the local area joined us for some great food and conversation. The gathering was part of The Great Get Together initiative which is inspired by Jo Cox and encourages people all over the country to celebrate the things we have in common. As well as good food there was a raffle, quiz, Bingo and colouring for our younger clients. We would like to thank Bradford Council for funding the food, our volunteers on the day and everyone who came along to take part.

Sport England Funds New Roof

We are delighted to announce that we now have a brand new roof over our gymnasium thanks to funding from Sport England. The exceptional roof work was carried out by Morgan Roofing over the last few weeks. Thank you Sport England and Morgan Roofing!

Alvina Strikes Bronze for England!

Our very own boxing champ, Alvina Razak, won a bronze medal at the Great Britain Tri-Nations Boxing Championships last month! We are very proud of our girl who is the first female to ever box for England from Bradford. We can’t wait to see what you will do next Alvina.

Youth Club Activities

Children had fun filling stockings with compost and seeds before decorating them with wiggly eyes and big smiles. Children aged 6-13 years can join our Youth Club by calling in and completing a registration form with their parents/carers. The Sedbergh Centre Youth Club takes place on Tuesdays from 5.30 – 8.30 p.m. every week. New members are always welcome – please call 01274 679843 for more details.

We would like to thank the Provident Financial Group for their continued support and funding which will enable us to run 12 Happy Cafes at the Sedbergh Centre over the coming year. The Happy Cafes will benefit members of the local community by helping people to connect with each other and learn new skills to improve well-being by taking part in a number of ‘Happy’ initiatives. We would love to encourage people to come along and join in with the group on the last Friday of each month from 10:00-12:00 noon. Admission is £2.00.

Youth Club Activities

Youth Club members had fun in April when they learnt how to make healthy snacks including fruit & yoghurts as well as Easter bun decorating. Children aged 6-13 years are welcome to come along on Tuesdays between 5.30 & 8.30 p.m. for games, sports and activities to encourage well-being & improve social skills. Admission is £3.00

We are delighted to announce that we have bagged £4,000 from Tesco’s Bags of Help community grant scheme to fund the Toddlers’ Eat and Beat with Your Feet project, thanks to our lovely clients who voted in Tesco stores. Tesco have been a great support to the centre and this additional funding will pay for fun activities and healthy snacks for babies and young people attending the sessions. We hope to encourage our youngest clients to eat and enjoy healthy food and educate them through sensory play, music, dancing and play in a fun environment. Bags of Help is run in partnership with environmental charity Groundwork, and sees grants awarded to thousands of local community projects every year. Thank you Tesco!
